Liverpool are edging closer to the signing of Hugo Ekitike after successfully agreeing personal terms with the highly-rated French striker — beating out competition from Newcastle United.
According to reports from journalists Santi Aouna and Fabrizio Romano, Ekitike has given his full approval to a move to Anfield and is eager to join the reigning Premier League champions. Contract terms have been finalised between the player’s representatives and Liverpool, marking a significant breakthrough in negotiations.
Although an initial offer to Eintracht Frankfurt was turned down, talks between the two clubs are ongoing, with optimism growing that a deal will be reached.
Newcastle, who have monitored Ekitike for some time, reportedly submitted a bid of around €75 million earlier in the summer, only for Frankfurt to reject the proposal.
The 23-year-old forward enjoyed a stellar 2024–25 campaign in Germany, notching 22 goals and providing 12 assists in 48 appearances across all competitions. His tally of 15 Bundesliga goals played a pivotal role in securing Frankfurt a third-place finish and Champions League qualification — a historic achievement for the club.
Having initially joined on loan from Paris Saint-Germain, Ekitike made his move to Frankfurt permanent in 2024, quickly establishing himself as one of Europe’s most promising attacking talents.
Liverpool’s interest in Ekitike aligns with manager Arne Slot’s plan to revamp the attacking unit. With Darwin Núñez made available for transfer and Luis Díaz expressing a desire to leave, the club is actively seeking a dynamic centre-forward.
While the Reds also considered a move for Newcastle’s Alexander Isak, the Magpies have made it clear the Swedish international is not for sale. As such, attention has turned fully to Ekitike, who is seen as a forward with both high potential and immediate impact.
Though not as established as Isak, Ekitike brings raw power, pace, and strong technical ability — attributes that fit seamlessly into Liverpool’s high-tempo system. His presence up front could offer a fresh focal point alongside creative forces such as Mohamed Salah and Florian Wirtz.
Manchester United and Chelsea had previously expressed interest in the Frenchman, but both clubs have since shifted focus to alternative targets.
With personal terms secured, Liverpool’s next priority is to reach an agreement with Eintracht Frankfurt and wrap up what could be one of the most exciting signings of the summer window.
